Transvaginal Sonography

Transvaginal ultrasounds are sometimes known as “endovaginal ultrasounds” because the transducer, which records images of your pelvic cavity, is put into your vagina. In a standard abdominal ultrasound, the sonologist moves the transducer around the belly to record images. This procedure is different compared to an abdominal ultrasound, a transvaginal ultrasound offers a more precise picture of your organs and the soft tissue inside your pelvic cavity.

However, if a transvaginal ultrasound cannot be performed, an abdominal ultrasound is an alternative. For instance, a transvaginal ultrasound may result in unwanted bleeding if you’re pregnant and the placenta is close to your cervix.

Transvaginal ultrasounds can offer additional details regarding anomalies seen during a pelvic examination that may help with a diagnosis.
